Claw Gear Rapax Softshell

Softshells protect us from wind and light rainfall, while also providing high breathability regardless of where you are. This is no different for the Claw Gear Rapax Softshell jacket.

Claw Gear Rapax weighs only 530g. It is made out of a 97% polyester and 3% elastane softshell fabric, which has a nice, but firm texture and has a similar feel to the materials used by the quality outdoor manufacturers in their products. As a softshell should, Rapax offers a good degree of protection against wind, and a water repellent coating provides a degree of resistaance against light rainfall.

Claw Gear Rapax softshell jacket is available in black, grey (‘solid rock), RAL7013 and brown (‘swamp’) colours.

The inner side of the softshell fabric features a layer of microfleece, which provides improved thermal properties to the jacket. As a result, Claw Gear Rapax is particularly suitable for a spring & autumn season, as well as colder days in the summer.

The cut of the Rapax jacket is rather loose, which makes it suitable both for use on its own, and as an external shell, together with an extra fleece or other warm layer.

Claw Gear Rapax is closed using an YKK zipper, which works well and is easy to operate thanks to a Hypalon handle. Underneath the zipper, the manufacturer has placed a well made, rubberized storm flap.

The jacket can be adjusted using a set of of drawstrings. To prevent loos shockcord from getting in the way, the excess cord has its exit inside the main pockets.

A set of velcros was placed on each cuff to allow further adjustments.

Claw Gear Rapax softshell features 4 pockets, which can be closed using YKK zippers with hypalon handles:

  • Two on the belly
  • One chest pocket
  • One on the left shoulder

On both biceps the manufacturer has placed velcros for morale patches and other identifications.

Our thoughts

When you first receive the Claw Gear Rapax softshell the first impression is very positive. The jacket is well made, the seams are straight, there are no loose threads and the main fabric has a firm, but pleasant texture.

When you inspect the jacket closely, you’ll start noticing the attention to detail shown by the manufacturer. Hypalon handles, well made storm flap, or even such a nice detail as the manufacturer’s logo placed in numerous places on the inside of the jacket, all show some extra care given to ensuring a good product is made. In other words, the quality of the Rapax jacket is on a considerably higher level than it was the case for the previously reviewed Claw Gear Aviceda fleece.

Claw Gear Rapax also stands it’s gorund in the real world use. The cut is comfortable, zippers work as they should and the main fabric offers good protection from wind, minor rainfall and cold.

Conclusions

Claw Gear Rapax is a well made, comfortable, and versatile softhsell jacket, which will be a good pick for the autumn/spring season, as well as the colder days in the summer. Wearing Rapax is a good experience, and thanks to a low profile cut, it blends in nicely in the urban environment.

special thanks for giving us a chance to test the Claw Gear Rapax softshell jacket goes to the manufacturer, Claw Gear!
